6 Signs Your Finances Need a Check-Up
Nobody wakes up one day and decides their finances are a mess — it usually creeps up through a series of small, easy-to-explain-away moments. Here are six that are worth taking seriously.
1. You couldn't cover a mid-size surprise expense without borrowing
Not a catastrophe — just a broken appliance, a dental procedure, a sudden travel need. If the honest answer is "I'd have to put it on a card and figure it out later," that's a signal, not a personality trait.
2. You know your salary but not your savings rate
Plenty of people can recite their CTC to the rupee but have no idea what percentage of it actually gets saved or invested each month. That gap between "money earned" and "money tracked" is usually where problems hide.
3. Insurance is something you meant to sort out
Health cover through an employer only lasts as long as the job does, and life insurance bought once in your twenties may no longer match your actual responsibilities today. "I have some insurance" and "I have the right insurance" are different claims.
4. Your investments happened, they weren't planned
A SIP a relative recommended, a policy an old colleague sold you, a stock tip from a group chat — each made sense on its own, but if you can't explain how they add up toward a specific goal, they're not really a plan.
5. "Retirement" still feels like someone else's problem
It's an easy one to defer indefinitely, precisely because nothing bad happens today if you don't think about it. That's exactly why it deserves a specific, scheduled check-in rather than perpetual postponement.
6. You've never actually seen all your numbers in one place
Income here, expenses there, an old EPF account, a couple of mutual funds, a insurance policy in a drawer — most people have never assembled the full picture at once, which makes it nearly impossible to judge whether things are actually on track.
If two or more of these sound familiar, a structured look is worth more than another mental note to "sort it out eventually." Financial Wellbeing's free Health Check walks through exactly these areas in about four minutes.
